LAST WRITING: You Don't Have To Call Sick Due To Headache!

Written by: Brad Delton - on November 25th, 2007

Didn't get your coffee in time? Couldn't sleep well last night? Or just stared at your computer too long during the day? There are many reasons for a headache. Sometimes there may be no reason at all. But the fact remains, that a headache can substantially reduce your ability to perform your daily tasks. I will discuss about lots of things you can do to prevent a headache, or at least reduce the chances of getting one. But first, let's say you already have a headache, now what? Of course that depends on where you live. If you're in developed countries like America, you'll most likely go grab a Tylenol or Advil. Whereas if you live in a poor rural area in India, the only option would be to massage your head. Whatever method that works for you, of course you should take it. But what if the medicines don't seem to work?

Well, that's exactly what happened to me. I have lots of over-the-counter pills that suppose to help with Cold or Flu symptoms. But when it comes to a headache, none of them work the way I expect them to do. So even if you may laugh at the Indian guy example above, I find a head massage amazing. It cures my headache like a magic. OK, how do I do that? It's very simple, I gently massage my temples and forehead for a minute or two, then gently pinch the area between the eyes until it gets a little red. All right, I did stress the word gently, because as you know, you shouldn't do anything extreme to punish your body. Lastly, remember that if it works for me, doens't mean it'll work for you. But if you're gentle enough, what's the harm? Or else, stick with your Aspirin!

Before I move on to some good tips that help prevent a headache, let me briefly find an excuse for drinking coffee. Yes, we all know that coffee causes headache, or more specifically, stop drinking it from a routine usage will cause most (if not all) coffee addicts to have a headache. The most likely reason is that your brain's blood vessels already adapt to the constriction caused by caffeine, so the lack (or less amount) of caffeine make those vessels to expand (swollen), thereby making your head ache. Now, if you intake about the same amount of caffeine daily, you shouldn't have any migraine due to blood vessel expansion. Many perfectionists would ask the naive question "why do you have to drink coffee?" The simple answer to that question is: productivity!

I don't know about other caffeine addicts, but I remember exactly the reason why I first drank coffee. That was because I could never work past the late afternoon, when I started yawning and nodding my head. My boss was not happy, and I was not happy because I had works piled up on my desk. So I gave in to a cup of coffee a day, and that solved the problem completely. So if you don't have to work the whole day, or if you have a chance to take a nap during the day, then coffee is just an unnecessary luxury. But if you have to face between having a home and being homeless, then the option is very clear.

Now, beside caffeine intake, there're many other things you can do to help prevent a common headache. Basically, if you take good care of other parts of your body, especially your nose, ears, and teeth, will help a lot.
  1. For many people, especially men, snoring can cause serious headache. If you snore and seem to have headache frequently in the morning, then it's most likely the cause. Consult with your doctor to cure the snoring problem first, that will help prevent headache. There're breathing devices, like CPAP, that can help solve the problem.
  2. Make sure you have enough fresh air to breathe all the time, while sleeping as well as working
  3. Strong odors such as perfumes and deodorants can cause headache, so try to avoid them.
  4. Avoid area where there's cigarette smoke or gaseous fume.
  5. Toothache can also cause headache, so take good care of your teeth will help prevent headache.
  6. Loud noises can make headache as well, so turn down your radio at work and TV at home.
  7. Avoid staring at your computer too long. Try look away every now and then, and look far away to relax your eye balls.
  8. Strong color such as red color can also hurt your eye, which in turn causes headache. Try to avoid using red paper, and set your computer color scheme to cooler one to protect your eyes.
  9. If you feel comfortable wearing sun glasses, that would help your eyes as well.
  10. Get enough sleep every night, at least 7 hours a day. Lack of sleep is the main cause of headache and diziness.
  11. Excessive sunshine and rain water can directly cause headache and other symptoms. Therefore, try avoiding too much sun light and use umbrella when it's raining.
  12. Some allergies also cause headache. So keep track of what you're allergic to and avoid those.
  13. Dehydration can also cause headache. So make sure you drink enough pure water at all time.
  14. Finally, mental stress can also cause headache. Psychological tricks, ranging from adverse psychology to ancient wisdom can help a lot. For example, if you're under financial stress, try think of those who are less fortunate than you, like those hard labors in China or India, who sweat all day just for food. Or if you're overwhelmed with works, try get some help from co-workers or boss and take it easy. Relax, and know that being stressful only makes things worse, not any better.
If conditions allow you to practice meditation or yoga, that would be very helpful. If you take good care of your physical and mental well-being, then good results will follow.
